I feel like it was wrong to buy the jacket. I'm not used to walking around with something that I paid money for. Suddenly I'm having all these stupid thoughts while I'm walking my usual route to work through the bowels of Southwark about getting mugged & when I ran into one of the Queeruption lasses in the street earlier I was convinced she was looking at it. I bought it in some way to try and look, if not particularly different to how I usually do, than at least to give more of an impression that I had actually intended to look that way. Imbuing possessions with any kind of financial value clearly encourages fears of crime and social stratification and is therefore evil. Or something.

I am sure your jacket is lovely! It is too easy to feel guilt for spending money on something; guilt about money is bad and brain hurting. You worked for the money, therefore you deserved the jacket; the money is just paper and bits of shaped metal in a bank. The jacket looks nice and will keep you warm/dry and will have pockets for stuff. It has more value than the money. :)

yeah, I'm just getting consumerist angst: wierd, idon't feel guilty about spending money on travel or alcohol or other such transitory things but anything that leaves me in posession of something tangible somehow feels wrong . .

Just think of it as having given some money to a needy shopkeeper as a gift, and stolen a jacket. This allows you to detach its monetary value.
