Went to see 21g last night with Maggie & Kat which was good, although I's irritatingly distracted by stuff going through my mind and not able to focus on the film as much as it deserved. It's by the same guy that made Amores Perros and whilst it doesn't have its snappy vibrancy (in fact its pretty ponderous,) it does share the same unflinching scrutiny of human experience and moral honesty in regard to the messy complexity of real life which is what makes them both so powerful.

Made me wonder if the fact that I tend to favour 'realistic' (or as Big Jon would have it: 'depressing') movies indicates that i don't use them as escapism in the way that a lot of people tend to, or whether it's just a different kind of escapism.

Your posts, more than anything, tempt me towards going back to the cinema.

I have not yet fallen...

I find depressing movies cheer me up a lot of the time. Maybe 'cheer' is the wrong word. Comfort is possibly closer.

i would say it was a different kind of escapism, one which highlights the other problems in the world, and/or allows you to relate to problems, unfortunatly i have seen either of these films =(

What time you planning on going to FT? what time you want people to come visit?

I'll probably be home from 4.30ish so you can come visit any time after that! don't imagine we'll head off Camden-wards till 10.15 or something like that now . . .

I know that I don't generally think of myself as watching films for "escapism". I watch them because I'm bored, or because I want to see something which is pretty, or exciting, or clever or funny, or because good acting is admirable, and often because I want to know what the writer and the director are trying to say.
