01/11/21 - 07/11/21
Nov. 20th, 2021 09:00 amWe've got loads of people starting at work so I moved on to the next induction on Monday and then had D&D in the evening: Tuesday was the start of a serious gig binge as everything cancelled from the last 18 months has been rearranged to pretty much all be on top of each other. I went to The Grace and saw firstly Nerves, who played a slightly ethereal stoner rock to a crowd that just about crept up to double-figures, then Dirty Orange who I've seen as a support band a bunch of times but seemed a bit heavier than before. I was there for Sheafs, who'd been pretty quiet over lockdown and it transpired had metamorphosed from landfill indie to something nearer to darkwave [singer Lawrence was even wearing a Bauhaus T-shirt] in the meantime: I was into it!
The next induction started on Wednesday, then I saw Milburn my second Sheffield band in two nights (and my first of a two-night residency at the memory-filled Scala), supported by Ed Cousens (from Reverend & the Makers) who had a full band but was ballad-y; Milburn were great with an energetic crowd, a situation repeated the next night with Kid Kapichi, who seem very much on the rise and were supported by punk-as-fuck Snayx and the rocky, female-fronted Projector. There are quite a few goings, as well as comings at work, and on Friday we went for some drinks locally for a couple of people, including Caroline who'll be greatly missed, which N came along to. It was short but intense (shots featured heavily) as the main party headed off to a Fireworks Night and I went up to the Courtyard Theatre to see Baby Strange, who were great and deserved a bigger audience.
The next morning N & I headed out to Wanstead to wander around the park and cemetery that are out there, which were pretty nice, then came into town, although I should probably have headed home as I ended up just killing time for a few hours (coffee shop, reading in a churchyard, wandering around Forbidden Planet) before meeting Cousin Andy & his girlfriend and C for Chinese food before attending the production of HMS Pinafore at the ENO: it had Les Dennis as Joseph Porter and they (thankfully) jiggered about with the dialogue quite a bit; still not one of my favourites but still enjoyable. I headed on down to Brixton afterwards where the Hootananny were having one of their Balkans nights, which featured a double-whammy of The Destroyers (surely the Theseus' Ship of bands, they had 12 people on stage none of whom I think I'd seen before) then Mr. Tea & the Minions; it was all good, danceable fun, although the night tube still hasn't returned so, despite leaving shortly after 2, after various frustrating night bus adventures it was pretty much 4.30 by the time I got in.
On Sunday I headed back into town and met up with L for an early screening of Venom 2, which did its entertaining schtick very well, then we chatted at Pret for a while before I headed off to get home, do my shop, have Family Zoomtime then cook dinner (having reluctantly given up on my harebrained scheme to go down to Southampton for the evening to watch October Drift, frustrated that I couldn't make their rearranged St Albans gig).
