On the first Wednesday of the month October Drift had come to their turn on the Scruff of the Neck livestream, which has been through pretty much every indie band I like at this stage. Work's continued to be pretty overwhelming with the amount that needs doing and I barely made it back to Tottenham in time to cast my Mayoral vote on the Thursday. Otherwise my evenings were just mainly hanging out, although Saturday was more active: N wasn't working until the evening so we had brunch at the Garden House then pootled around some of the green spaces in Crouch End and the Queen's Wood. After catching up with Gaz B's livestream, I headed out to Rickmansworth in the evening and saw J and some of his friends, which had been much missed and was good for the soul, although inevitably meant that Sunday was mostly taken very easy until family zoomtime.
The next week was mostly dominated by one of the cats (Jazz) being rushed in to have an emergency operation, although he came through okay and returned a few days later, still in a fairly sorry state but gradually improving (although he's now acquired an apparently completely unrelated eye-infection!) Otherwise I had D&D on Monday, online board games with R&L Tuesday (we tried Rail Road Ink and Inca Gold) , on Wednesday I met Ez for another boozy night outside at The Beehive and Gaz B's livestream on Friday. On the Saturday N & I returned to Crouch End to meet up with his ex-housemate L (whose room I took over) for lunch outside one of the pubs there, then I headed down into town and joined the march in support of the Palestinian people, mostly just trailing along at the back until it ground to a halt somewhere near the Israeli Embassy. On Sunday N & I walked along the South Bank eastwards from London Bridge, which turned out to be pretty interesting and not a section we knew well, before catching the river boat back to enjoy cheese and wine sitting out at Gordon's, then I headed home in time for family zoomtime.
The restrictions loosened another notch from Monday, meaning that people could sit inside pubs and restaurants and seated, distanced live music could start again. Plenty of bands were taking advantage right from the get go (many doing two sets a night to compensate for the smaller venue capacities) and on Monday night I saw a stripped back set from three members of Fat White Family with Joey at the Lexington; Tuesday we met some friends of N's at the Bluecoats, actually sitting inside; Wednesday (having gone to Banbury and back int he morning for the funeral for my Great Uncle Geoff) I was with Joey again (plus a friend of his) at 229 to see October Drift in the flesh, supported by Ed Tattesall who wasn't my usual thing but definitely talented; by Thursday I was beginning to feel pretty ragged and glad that we were sitting down as I went down to the Windmill to see The Queen's Head supported by Kitty Fitz; then finally on Friday, luckily easy to pop down to after working at home, I saw Cassells at The Shacklewell Arms.
Last Saturday I headed up to Oxford for an excitingly in-person Trustee Meeting for The Iris Project, which we held at the school as they'd just their first in-person event for an age, a trail round the trees in the school grounds, then back to Archie's garden which was lovely. In the evening I joined J & A and some of the usual suspects who were doing an online shared viewing of the somewhat disastrous stream of music from the Glastonbury site. I had to do some work Sunday morning, then joined Lisa's birthday zoom call in the afternoon, caught up with Gaz's livestream, had family zoomtime and actually watched TV/DVDs for the first time all week, when it had become such a regular part of my life over the past year.
This last week had D&D again on Monday, then a couple of quieter evenings before heading up to the Blackhorse Road area Thursday evening: first for a drink with N (who'd had the week off) outside the Ferryboat Inn there, then to a gig outside the Signature Brewery, so it was just as well the last week or two's constant rain was finally giving way to something more resembling the start of Summer. I was there for support act Sick Joy, the headliners Clt Drp (they let you fill in the vowels for yourself) were so much indebted to Peaches they even had a song about her.
I went into the office instead of working from home Friday, so i could join a slightly chaotic leaving drink for a couple of colleagues (both of whom have joined and left during Covid, which feels weird) outside a Chelsea pub afterwards. Yesterday N & I went out to check out the Isokon building in Belsize Park, then wandered across the Heath to find somewhere for tea and cake. We came home, then I headed out again in the evening to see Kid Kapichi play down at Werkhaus. I had given away the spare seat at the 2 person 'table' I'd had to buy and it turned out the guy who took it played in a band (Playground Circus) I had seen perform at Philanthropunks. They had support (Blue Stragglers who were pretty rocky) and it was the first of the seated gigs I've been to where the crowd were in danger of getting a bit out of control.
