Last Sunday I headed down to feed Ketch's cat while she was away in the morning (Lear hissed suspiciously at me a good deal but, given his record, that was getting off quite lightly) then met up with N at the Imperial War Museum which had a couple of actually quite interesting free exhibitions on, about the treatment of culture in wartime and music as an expression of resistance under repressive regimes. We headed up into Hackney and had a Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak on Columbia Road, which had a nice bustling feel to it, before heading home. I fed Lear again after work on Monday then came home to D&P in my flat, who were staying while they visited from Oz and took me out for dinner: a lovely excuse to actually eat out locally, which I almost never do, and much needed after a hectic first Monday of the drop-in being back open.
I went to a Pub Quiz with some work colleagues Tuesday night, which was really good fun: we came second out of five and it reminded me how much I miss just going to the pub with people. Since then I've had a weirdly quiet time: I'd deliberately not made too many plans as I wasn't sure what my guests would be doing, although they've mostly been out and about, and hadn't committed to anything at the weekend because I was kidding myself that I may go to Empire, which didn't happen, meaning I've not made it all this year. We're respawning as a new group next year, though, so I'm hoping that will succeed in re-engaging me. Also M has gone away to Singapore for a week so I wanted to make the most of having the flat to myself although, whilst it's been fairly productive and relaxing, it's quickly reminded me why I like to go out as much as possible.
So I was just at home Wednesday, Thursday (with N coming over) and Friday evenings and then most of Saturday (Test Match Special keeping me company), although I did go out late afternoon to make sure I enjoyed at least a bit of the sun and sat among the crowds on Primrose Hill, which included a man with two parrots. I was a bit more active on Sunday: N & I went down to Croydon and started walking a bit of the Wandle Trail, taking us through unxpected delights such as Waddon Ponds, Beddington, Carshalton Ponds and Wilderness Island, although it was still hot and we only made it as far as Hackbridge. We jumped onto transport over to Bermondsey and had cider in one of the under-the-arches breweries, then N headed off and I sat in a nearby pub watching the last cricket of the summer before heading home.
Last night I went over to Ketch's where she provided a lovely dinner and regaled me with her experience in Slovenia and tonight I am home alone again: I've caught up on as many films in the last week as I probably had in the previous several months!
