30/07/19 - 08/08/19
Aug. 14th, 2019 06:32 pmN came over for dinner the evening after I got back from Truck, then on the Wednesday I was hoping to go to work colleague L's 30th drinks at least for a bit but I had to go off on a work mission, which pissed me off, so I ended up heading straight to the Old Blue Last. I'd seen The Novus once before so had wanted to catch them opening the bill (although I'm probably more excited by the endearing energy than the actual songs), then we had Guru, who had a strong South London scene vibe and another lively frontman. The main event were Queen Zee, who I'm still loving.
I was at home Thursday evening, then working from home Friday after M & I went to an appointment to renew our mortgage for another 3 years first thing. I'm not sure I was more productive than normal but I did get a whole bunch of tasks ticked off that I never get round to in the office. The main downside was that it was very sedentary, especially since I was in that evening as well.
The Saturday N & I checked out what turned out to be a small, slightly disappointing Wolfgang Tillmans exhibition in a Bethnal Green gallery, then wandered in the sun down to the Tower Hamlets Cemetery, one of the Magnificent Seven, which was picturesquely overgrown and wooded; further wanderings took us down to Limehouse, then across for swanky tea on Brick Lane. In the evening I headed over to Notting Hill for a gig at the Arts Club: I enjoyed The Flitz, although the vocals were a bit drowned out, and I was there to see The Framatics again. Our attempts to organise a picnic for Sunday afternoon were a bit of a failure but we ourselves met with some food in the Dalston Curve Garden and N's friends C&S joined us later for drinks so we still had a nice afternoon anyway.
The Usual Suspects came over to play Dominion Monday night, which was the first time we'd all been together for an age and was a fun evening; I went over to N's Tuesday evening, then met up with Ketch to finally see CC Smugglers at Omeara on Wednesday, a gig that had been cancelled and rearranged twice. We got there during Morganway, the sort of band that has a fiddle and alternating singers: the female of whom had a belter of a voice. CC Smugglers were worth every moment of the wait, really proving that a frontman with charisma and energy can really make a band.
On Thursday I went over to the Victoria in Dalston for more bands: I had seen Beach Riot for the first time at Truck, although they were thrashier than I remembered (and had a different drummer!) I had also seen Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard once before, for me the singer's cavorting detracts from the experience of seeing them, although his banter definitely entertained. I was there for Kid Kapichi, who seem to be building a fair bit of buzz around them.
