I had a morning off on the Friday, although this was mainly for the purpose of going to the dentist: rather shamefully it was my first visit in a decade but I seem to have got away without any major issues. We had drinks after work as Mr. Starlight Express (our Fundraising Manager) was leaving, which was pretty fun: our COO unafraid to try her luck arm-wrestling various colleagues. N was finally out of shows so I met him for brunch in Shoreditch on Saturday, then we ended up walking down to the river and what was intended to be along the North Bank to the Canary Wharf area, although we rather more shadowed the river as you couldn’t quite get to the riverside for much of it.

I went home for a bit then headed out to Kingston in the evening: I got to The Oak at 8.20 to find out that The Lodgers, who I’d come to see, were already playing, although it turned they were just into the first of three 45minute sets so I hadn’t missed much proportionately: I had a really nice night actually, there was a strong sense of local community in the mixed, responsive audience and plenty to dance to, with a few classic covers thrown in. We were having a weekend 7th Sea session on Sunday afternoon and managed to make some progress before switching to some games. I managed to drop in on a gig in Deptford on my way back from Lewisham. Honkfest was billed as a gathering of brass-involving bands with activist connections, there were due to be talks as well as music, but I was again caught out by the band I was mostly there for Towtown Hustle already being on when I got there (being at the top of the poster in this instance apparently meant playing first). I got to see a few songs for my three quid, however, and took the opportunity to give the rest a miss and have some time at home for the remainder of the evening.

N came over for dinner on Monday and, having been unable to choose between two possible plans, I ended up doing neither and heading over to Lisa’s in answer to an SOS Tuesday evening. I was over at N’s Wednesday night, then Thursday (having slipped away from work early to ensure I could vote in the Euro elections) I headed up to St Albans in the evening for a gig. This wasn’t as crazy as it sounds as The Horn is just a couple of minutes from the station there and the Thameslink goes through West Hampstead, so it was no more than half an hour door-to-door. I was going as two bands I really liked were touring together but not coming to London: before them were Vigilantes, confident, noisy indie-rock from Boston (the UK one), playing in front of an alarmingly busy light show. I was there for first October Drift then Red Rum Club, very different but both amazing. The crowd was quite a mix age-wise, I don’t know if that was a being-out-of-London thing or because OD in particular have a dedicated set of fans following them around who make me look positively youthful.

After work on Friday I met up with N for a drink up near Kings Cross then carried on our Game of Thrones re-watch with M at home, having a chilled evening before heading off on holiday.
