Turning 41 06/04/19-11/04/19
Apr. 14th, 2019 07:52 amI was torn between feeling I should have a fairly low-key birthday this year, after currython and my 40th, and wanting to make the most of it falling on a Saturday. In the end I had a really nice morning pottering around at home by myself then headed out to Tottenham for lunch with N then to join his housemate L (who shares my birthday)'s drinks at their local, The Beehive. Unexpectedly and excitingly, K had phoned me in the morning and invited herself up for the celebrations so it was lovely to see her and she was her inimitably sociable self, soon best friends with all the different groups present and au fait with their hidden dynamics.
I ended up leaving her with them and went down by myself to the Water Rats just to see The Green Brothers play, which I managed to sneak in before heading on down to The Phoenix to rejoin N (who just stayed for a drink while we assembled) and about half a dozen others for yet another birthday Feeling Gloomy outing; they were having a Pulp night (25 years since His’n’Hers), so it seemed like fate and a hard core of us danced through until the end.
I had had various possible plans for Sunday but in the end it all became recovery: K had been going to have ‘one more drink’ then go back to Hampshire when I left her, but had never made it, ending up spending the night on a houseboat, so she came over and we spent the afternoon on the sofa with Miss Marple and Murder, She Wrote. I'd also agreed to let ex-housemate R stay for the night, as she was over for a clown course, but after chatting for a bit, we were both keen to crash pretty early.
I had a quietish week, with plans cancelled Monday and Thursday: on Tuesday I was at the Omeara near London Bridge (great space, expensive drinks) for the King No-One gig; they had solid support from Latenight Honeymoon (melodic indie) and Iridesce, who I’ve seen play with them a couple of times now and bring a strangely French fan-base. King No-One continue to embrace the accusation of having ‘cult-like’ shows, you could find their appeals to equality and alternative lifestyle cheesy but these days it’s just nice to hear anyone fighting those corners.
We had another work outing on Wednesday, this time a more official, end of season event across the whole organisation; we went back to the Four Thieves in Clapham but I just stayed for a bit then headed up to spend the rest of the evening at N’s.
