At the start of April Mum & Dad had decided to come up and explore Greenwich for a couple of days so they came over on Monday night and I cooked for them, N & Cousin A, which was very convivial; things were a little more stilted when it was just the three of us going for a pre-theatre dinner the next evening. We watched Arthur Miller’s The Price , with David Suchet doing his ‘funny old Jew’ schtick, but he very much enlivened the first half, then barely appeared in the second, although by then it had picked up enough speed to pack its punch without him.

Of various gig options I ended up going to the Black Heart (as the most convenient) on the Wednesday and caught JW Paris, a trio with the two guitarists both singing that I’m not sure if I’d seen before, and Longy and the Gospel Trash, whose classic singer-songwriter package continues to impress. On Thursday night I headed up to Nambucca early to catch Man the Lifeboats on first (“raucous, upbeat folk”), next were Skaboro, who were reggae-ish and liberally sprinkled with covers; I was mainly there for The Great Malarkey , who were having a particularly drunk and chaotic night, although it didn’t make the music any less fun.

It had been a weird week at work: S the drop-in manager had unexpectedly quit at the weekend so we were dealing with the last week of the shelters with the drop-in open limited hours and a lot of uncertainty; it was also D’s last week, who had come in as one of the shelter caseworkers for just a few months and been really good but found his dream job to move on to. I think we were all ready to go for some drinks on Friday night (trying out another of Chelsea’s ridiculous pubs, The Phene) and there was a lot of letting down of hair.

I left the youngsters to it at about 8 and headed initially to Dingwalls in Camden to see first Lucia, female-fronted guitar pop from Scotland, and then the joyous Marsicans, who it felt like I hadn’t caught in ages. I then managed to finesse heading back up to Nambucca to see The Americas and headliners False Heads again, whose punky indie continues to excite me.
