Mar. 10th, 2019 09:27 pmI headed down to Petersfield last Saturday to see K: she's been having a bit of a rough period and we had a wild time chaining old episodes of MasterChef, then after we'd had some take out and the kids had gone to bed we treated ourselves to the John Malkovich Poirot that had been on over Xmas; Sunday morning we spent sat next to each other on her sofa catching up on work on our laptops, but it was an oddly nice way to do it. Getting back to London was tortuous, between accidents on the road to Petersfield then a bus replacement for some of the train journey, and I headed straight up to Stoke Newington for a roast with N and his housemates at the packed out Jolly Butcher.
I headed home for a power nap but did venture out down to the Windmill in the evening and saw The Youts brilliantly kick off the night; Fiende Fatale were South London sceney (some of Shame's sneer and HMLTD's performance), as were Mice on Mars, although they managed to really get the crowd going. Monday was also a gig, back in Stokie at the Waiting Room, and my random student interlocutor popped up again. First on XGD were layered and atmospheric, whilst Meggie Brown were a jaunty, evenly gender-split sextet; I'd gone to catch Starlight Magic Hour again, whose dark lyrics were pretty much the opposite of jaunty.
I then had a few nights at home, albeit after a quick, very necessary post-work drink on Wednesday (more staffing woes, my most recent minion, who's excellent, has handed in his notice after just a few months as his dream job came up) and with the usual gang coming over for a couple of games of Dominion on Thursday. I went over to N's Friday night, although a very early night just meant I was awake very early the next day.
I'd had nothing really planned for this weekend either (which is really frustrating as there are loads of gigs coming up I'm missing because they clash with things: Calva Louise, Blackwaters, Allusinlove, Cabbage, Arrows of Love, Mr Tea & the Minions): N and I had brunch in Angel then poked around the Modern City section of the Museum of London, I ended up having an afternoon drink with Cousin A in West Hampstead then one the old FNB volunteers had taken pity on me and invited me down to New X for the evening, which randomly involved hanging out with the Goldsmiths Rugby Team and observing their post-match drinking rituals, before chilling out back at L's flat. I brunched again today, with M and Cousin A, but have otherwise have mostly just been doing domestic stuff.
