satyricaI was home Thursday evening and spent a bit of time being sociable as M's Mum arrived for the weekend, she then joined a gaggle of us on Friday in seeing True West in the West End, a Sam Sheppard play with Kit Harrington and Johnny Flynn starring: they were both fine but the play both seemed very much of its time with its competitive masculinity and also pretty opaque in what it was really trying to communicate; none of us were much impressed.
I went up to meet N in a cafe in Tottenham on Saturday and we managed to finally sit down and book our holiday before heading down to the White Cube gallery in Bermondsey for a Tracy Emin exhibition that didn't particularly excite us. I went out again in the evening, first to Camden to catch Feral Youth at a packed out Good Mixer, then on up to Nambucca where Lighthouse were playing, although I first saw Mellor and Fine Creatures, who were both fine, but it was gratifying to hear Lighthouse sounding like a cut above them; I hung around for the start of The Maritans, who seemed nice but were too chilled out for that time of night.
On Sunday I met back up with N, Ketch and Lisa to finally see the Assyrian exhibition at the British Museum (I Am Ashurbanipal) which was pretty busy but had some amazing narrative reliefs from the palaces of Nineveh and used some nice projection techniques to make the most of them. We went our own ways for a bit then I headed over to N's for dinner in the evening.
Last night I was out at MOTH Club along with a couple of Meet Up people to see Hotel Lux: it was quite a packed line-up, I'd missed two bands and still saw Bo Gritz, a bit Idles-y with less lyrical clout and more noise, and 60s-influenced Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard with a Jagger-channeling frontman, before the headliners. Gig cancelled tonight but work's still pretty full on so probably good to have a night off.
