Last weekend was quite a cluster of birthdays: Saturday daytime my ex T's partner A was celebrating at Central Station, where they apparently have a gay boardgaming event every three weeks which seemed like a really positive community space: I played Maskarade and Evolution. Then in the evening I headed up to Stamford Hill for my Food Not Bombs friend M's Fake News-themed birthday: N emerged from his marking to pop down for a bit but otherwise it's become one of those events where I've started recognising the same people from coming each year, it was lovely to see M again and I stayed until the dancing in the basement got going and I had exhausted my social capital.

My school friend R and his finacee had moved from being pretty much our nearest neighbours in Kentish Town to a more familyish property in Twickenham and on Sunday I headed out with M and N for a combination Housewarming/H's birthday which was very civilised and pleasant, a few other school friends also came along. On Monday I headed down to a gig at 229: I had gone to see The Youts, who were on first, so I took the opportunity to slope off afterwards and have some time at home as M had disappeared to Dubai for work.

I headed over to meet N after work on Tuesday, as his step-mother and step-sister were over from America, and we had some food with them before I disappeared off to Brixton to meet up with my recently acquired gig-buddy Joey. We were at the Windmill for Phobophobes and saw first Misty Miller, an impressive one-girl-and-guitar act, then straight-up punk from Italia 90. Roleplaying was cancelled on Wednesday so I took the opportunity for an evening in as I'd found the day at struggle at work, feeling overwhelmed by how much I have to do seems to make me even less productive at getting on and doing it.

It's Independent Music Venue Week so the gigs were plentiful and I headed out to the Sebright Arms on Thursday night where two bands I really rate were on the same bill: before them were Monster Florence, fronted by three rappers, outside my usual parameters but it was alright. Much more my thing were neo-grungers Sick Joy and psy-rockers Broken Hands who, having recently re-emerged after a long period of silence, pretty boldly played a set of almost entirely new songs but they absolutely held their own.

Last night was a gig on a different scale: we were having drinks after work to say goodbye to V, who's been the caretaker at the church for the last 9 years, so I only just got to Wembley Arena in time for The Wombats to come on; having all my stuff with me, the lack of a cloakroom somewhat cramped my being-in-a-crowd style and they still have a bafflingly young fanbase for a band that have been around so long, but it was great to hear their songs live.
