Last Friday we finally managed to re-convene the Lewisham roleplaying crew for our second 7th Sea session, as it was a Friday we ended up going quite late which was good as we'd just started picking up momentum. N and I did a bit of poking about London on Saturday: a weird little Jeremy Deller neolithic-themed installation/pop-up shop on the Strand, which was enjoyably light-hearted, and some really good photos of Sylvia Pankhurst's more working class end of the women's suffrage movement at the Four Corners gallery in Bethnal Green. I went to one of This Feeling's Big in 2019 gigs at Nambucca in the evening, alongside a couple of Meet Up guys, and saw thrashy indie youngsters The Estevans, Lacuna Bloome who were slightly lacking in edge, Zuzu, which was just the name of the singer rather than her whole band I think, then Hands Off Gretel, who I enjoy but whose songs never really stick with me, before calling it a night.
The Sunday was the Stone Setting for N's aunt, so we headed up to the Jewish Cemetery in Bushey (which was all abuzz as some Holocaust victim remains were being interred the same day) for the ceremony, then back to his uncle's in Stanmore afterwards. It was a big family occasion with lots of people there, although nice in its own way, even if I felt like I was just kinda awkwardly hanging around the edges of everything the whole time. I dropped by L, who'd been in the wars, to bring her some shopping on the way home, then popped out to the Dublin Castle in the evening just to catch one band, Feral Youth, who I'm still enjoying.
I was at home Monday night (another dubious attempt to make gnocchi) then braved the snow flurries to head out to The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington, which was packed out despite the weather and location, to watch October Drift. Shrimp Eyes were on first, who were pretty regulation-guitar-band, then China Bears, who had a bit more oomph, but OD really blew things away. We had a staff away day on Wednesday, strategising and personality profiling from the impressively-vistaed top floor of a city law firm, then went for drinks afterwards, about half of us stuck around for a few hours and N joined us, who of course everyone loved, before we headed off for food together.
Thursday was another Big in 2019 gig, this time at The Monarch, although the line-up suffered a number of changes and I only went down for the last two bands in the end. It was still worth it to catch Mummy again, whose heavy grunge and snot-nosed lyrics did not disappoint; Sugar Thief were more dreamy indie-pop youngsters and acknowledged they were following on with a very different energy level. I'd worked two very long days Thursday and Friday and, very rarely for me, really felt the need for my quiet Friday night in to recharge.
