I headed back to work properly after New Year's Day and just had an evening in on the Wednesday but headed over to the late opening of the Barbican's Modern Couples exhibition the next day which was immense: i just about got round it in 2 1/2 hours, lots of interesting stuff, even if many names I didn't know, although the Tom Lehrer fan in me was pleased to see Alma Mahler-Gropius-Werfel get her own room.

N came over Friday night and then, after some daytime domesticity, I headed up to Stoke Newington for the afternoon to celebrate his birthday: first catching up with his ex-housemate D, back from Bristol, over tea and cake, then with a good crowd of people at board-game bar Scenario. He seems to have finally beaten the curse of his birthday turn-outs over the last few years and the party even ended up coming back to Bruce Grove and carrying on for a bit. Sunday was his actual birthday and we went for brunch with D (who it was great to see) before heading on down to the Tate Modern to see Christian Marclay's The Clock, 24 hours of snatches of film referencing time stitched together into a flowing piece; we watched about half an hour [12.55-1.30ish, in case I ever want to catch a different part], did a bit more South Bank mooching, then went our separate ways.

I headed into Camden in the evening to meet E, who I hadn't seen for months and months, for drinks and dinner; together with N's birthday, it made for a boozy and expensive weekend, but was a lot of fun as usual. Monday night was a bit of a disaster: roleplaying was cancelled then the headliners (Starlight Magic Hour, my second failed attempt to see them) didn't turn up for my emergency back-up gig, meaning I only saw about half of one act at the Shacklewell Arms, Pet Grotesque, whose indistinct vocalisations over laptop music seemed to be either very much your thing or [my case] very much not.

Yesterday I headed down to Clapham after work to see S [continuing my January resolution to catch up with people I hadn't seen for ages]: we did our usual meander along the pubs there, although it turned out the Kazbar had closed 2 years ago, indicating how long it had been since we were last there. I managed to motivate myself to walk to work across Hyde Park this morning, a good psychological step to feeling like we're moving away from the long, dark days, and am at home tonight.
