With a fortnight to go before Christmas, I headed to the Old Blue Last on the Monday night, just catching the end of shouty, female-fronted Lazybones and then Big Spring, who had a very Queens-of-the-Stone-Agey sound but were good with it; I was there for Fangclub, Irish rockers who I'd again been waiting for a while to come round again and it was great to see. I went to the shelter Tuesday evening, very excitingly the last evening I should have to work this season as the new dude had started this week, giving the tantalising hope of being back down to just doing the one job.

On Wednesday evening N & I went to a little cheese evening they were having at Borough Market, with just the cheese stalls and carollers, which finally made me feel a little bit festive; we wandered from there along to Flat Iron Square, where Tankus the Henge were doing a free outdoor gig in two halves, which was fun if not the warmest experience. Then Thursday night I briefly popped to the Monarch, just to see The Green Brothers, who I'd seen supporting someone an age ago and never quite managed to catch again, guitary youngsters with some enthusiastic fans.

On Friday N & I both managed to slip away early and headed down to Brighton for A's 65th Birthday, for which she had hired out the Hotel Pelirocco, a rock'n'roll themed hotel with each of its rooms decorated by a different designer. A few guests were there the Friday night and we all had a fairly chilled out evening in the hotel, then Saturday daytime N & I wandered out into Brighton to be greeted by some pretty relentless and unpleasant sleety rain, mostly aimed at our faces, which didn't make it the best time to be trying to wander around the lanes Christmas shopping. We did meet up in a cafe with N's friends K&D, which was very nice, but we called time earlier than we'd planned and I retreated to the hotel to warm up while N headed back up to London.

The main party was on Saturday night and A had got Arrows of Love to come down and play although, in typically chaotic fashion, they only got there and set-up in the hotel bar in time to play for about 20 minutes before the curfew brought things to an end. I was really glad Gav and his family were there and it was nice hanging out with the band a bit more, although Jamie hadn't been able to come over which never really stopped overshadowing the event. We headed down to A's suite after the bar closed and carried on until morning.

I managed to leave earlyish the next day and wind my way on trains up to Egham for our latest Lovecraftian LARP, now moved to a family-friendly afternoon slot, which PFW was running and was a nice excuse to see people. I headed back to London afterwards and did actually manage to spend a couple of hours at home before popping down to Brixton just to see Phobophobes headlining their Xmas show at the Windmill.
