I went round to N's the Thursday before last and out to the improbably named Zigfrid von Underbelly in Hoxton on the Friday night: somewhat inconveniently, I wanted to catch the first and last sets on a five-band bill, so started with Feral Youth, who I'd seen once before and were okay, then stayed through Dirty who played unusual and absorbing slow, doomy numbers, if a bit one-note, then a band who had both not yet settled on their name and were a bit fogettable, then Mauve, who had a bit more spunk; The Youts were headlining and have an irrepressibility that made them worth the wait.
I headed down to Petersfield on Saturday to see K and we ended up having the laziest time, just hanging out watching films and eating pizza while the kids largely entertained themselves, which was I think what we both needed. I crashed over and N met me at Waterloo when I headed back on Sunday, we stumbled upon the Koestler Prize (an exhibition of art by inmates) at the RFH which we've been to a few times now and seemed to have quickly come round again, then headed our separate ways.
Last week we had Book Group Monday, we were down to three to discuss Julian Barnes' England, England, which I think I enjoyed more than the rest, so I think we'll give it a rest again. On Tuesday we went out after work for drinks to say goodbye to our Interim Boss, the ex-army guy who ended up staying three times as long as he was meant to but won us all round. I hadn't drunk for a month previously but it was definitely needed after a stressful day and four of us ended up hanging around to come 3rd in the Coopers' Arms pub quiz.
N came over on Wednesday, then on Thursday I popped down to Guildford in the evening to see Imperial Leisure at the Star there, since I wasn't going to be able to make their London show. It was a nice venue and I do sometimes wonder if I would do better living somewhere with a smaller scene where I might get to know people via all my gig-going more. I got there during Rage DC, some old-school political punks, and there was also support from Dakka Skanks, young purveyors of ska with both a frontman and a frontwoman. I've mostly seen Imperial Leisure at festivals so it was rare to see them do such a long set but they maintained their energy levels and I danced from start to finish. I was in plenty of time for the last train back from Guildford but had missed the last tube so it was a hickeldy journey back home, which got me in pretty late.
