Two weekends ago M headed up to the Peaks for the weekend so I looked forward to having the flat to myself, spending some time catching up on stuff, then promptly locked myself out. This idiocy involved taking my work keys instead of my home ones, so I spent a bit of time in the office (which goes against the grain but probably did my stress levels a lot of good) then headed up to Oxford Saturday afternoon to see L in a rare non-Iris context. One of her ex-students was around and A&E came over so it was all very convivial, although I did leave again still feeling like I'd not really spoken to L or A and didn't stay too late knowing I had to get back up to N's to ensure I had somewhere to sleep. I headed out in the morning to have brunch with [personal profile] cryx, who had just flown in from the other side of the globe, then pootled along the South Bank before flomping in Will's Vauxhall flat, surveying the world below. I went back up to N's in the evening: it was his housemate's 30th and the resident techies had set up an outdoor cinema in the back garden for us to watch Jurassic Park while eating pizza to mark the occasion.

M was back in London but worked pretty late Monday so I went straight to the Shacklewell Arms to see first Deep Tan, a female 3-piece who had a song called Shimmer which pretty much summed up their sound, then Meat Candy, who I was getting round to seeing for the second time and had a vocals-light, psychedelic sound that really sucked you in. Luckily they weren't headlining so I had time to head home and be finally let back in before it got too late. I'd been supposed to be heading back to the Shacklewell on Tuesday but was feeling ill and retreated to my bed instead. On Wednesday I met N from his work and we had a quick drink before heading our separate ways, then on Thursday I went to the Garage to see Yungblud: I got there during the support, Stereo Honey, indie boys with swoopy vocals, then Yungblud came on and gave it his all as usual. He's one of the artists I'm following who seems to be getting quite a following, although it also seems to be mainly teenage girls, which made me slightly more self-conscious than usual at the gig, but there's an urgent authenticity to his performance that soon overrode that.

On Friday I headed off to Empire: I always have a bit of pre-event ambivalence and it was accentuated this time around because a few people weren't going to be there, I was missing a few London-based happenings and I'm having a few weeks booze-free (to see whether it has any impact on my weight & finances)- drinking around campfires having always been one of the game's biggest selling points for me. In the event, however, I had a really good weekend: the weather pretty much behaved itself and I made a bit more of an effort to be pro-active with my character, in very modest ways and without really getting any more Involved In Stuff as a result, but I never particularly felt that I was just twiddling my thumbs and felt like I at least had much more of a grip on everything that was going on. Occupying the East Wing of R's palatial tent was also pretty awesome: who knew how much easier everything would be when you can actually stand up in your living quarters?
