I went round to N's after easing myself back into work on the Tuesday after the August Bank Holiday then was back up in Stoke Newington on Wednesday evening to a venue called The Waiting Room, which turned out to be beneath the pub we'd had a drink in two days before, to see impressive Northern Irish youngsters Brand New Friend supported by perennial favourites Calva Louise. I headed down to Lewisham the next evening for board games, revisiting the glorious mutual suspicion of Werewolf & The Resistance. I went to another Rough Trade East in-store performance straight from work on Friday, watching Spring King give an enjoyably intimate little set to launch their new album, followed by some predictably awkward band-interaction as I got my CD signed. Partly because of the ongoing DIY chaos at home, I headed up to The Islington to see some more music, although I didn't particularly dig the place so decided to sit around Angel, reading, until it was time for my band to come on. Things were running late so I still ended up also catching Slobheads, a young local punk duo who were actually pretty decent, before the enjoyable Irish-tinged folk-punk of Man the Lifeboats.

On Saturday N & I met up to go round Kew Gardens, which I thought I'd been to 15 or so years ago but didn't really recognise at all; it looked its best in the glorious sunshine and we were pretty thorough, taking in royal residences, glass houses, treetop walks, Asian follies and beautiful woodland. I headed off up to Rickmansworth where J was putting on a gig in his role of social secretary for the Mill End & District Community Centre (basically The Jockey from Shameless) with three one-guy-and-guitar acts, including his brother Dan whose lyrics had an enjoyable piquancy which the other acts, Chris Simmons and a guy called John, for all their impressive voices, couldn't match. Having met a bunch of J's friends and family now, I ended up being invited back to some dude's flat with a bunch of other folk, crashing there until the tubes started up again. On Sunday I was due to go down to Winchester to take part in a sociable pre-wedding wine tasting for R&H, which luckily was not until the afternoon otherwise I seriously doubt I would have made it. I perked up on the way down with M & N, however, and it was a lovely occasion in a patioed garden out the back of a fancy deli and wine shop there. Great to see some friends and also meet some of the future wedding guests.

Last week I had a lovely dinner (and games of Romans Go Home!) round Lisa's on Monday night, headed down to the Brixton Academy with PFW to see Ezra Furman, who I've more been friends with fans of than been mad about myself, but gave a really powerful performance, supported by Gengahr, who I'd not seen for a few years and enjoy more musically than vocally. I went to the National on Wednesday with Ketch to see Julie, a fairly close (it seems) modernised version of Miss Julie, which was clunky in places but entertaining. N came over on Thursday evening as I embarked upon one of my unnecessarily fiddly weeknight cooking escapades (fried herby goats cheese with quick blueberry chutney and cavolo nero bruschetta) while he attacked the crossword with M.

sociable pre-wedding wine tasting for R&H

Goodness! I never cease to be amazed at quite how much seems to go into planning a wedding, but I think this is the first time I've known it expanding to a wider social circle. Sounds like a great idea: if you're tasting wine, get friends along!

(I am currently watching from the sidelines as a friend tries to organise a wedding which has a London leg and an India leg, and a positively ridiculous number of tastings and samplings and viewings. And probably fittings, although they haven't been mentioned yet.)
