With my usual disregard for my own recuperation, I was straight back into work on the Wednesday after I got back from holiday, although luckily I ended up easing in with three 'office' days, then headed out in the evening to Camden Assembly to catch King No-One; the support I saw were Iridesce, poppy indie with swoopy vocals, who were a bit style over substance but irrepressible in their charm. King No-One's appeal is also largely driven by charisma, it wasn't quite the Messianic experience of their last gig but still not to be missed.
Thursday I was at the Borderline to see Pretty Vicious, who still give good gig, although their Northern Irish support, Brand New Friend were extremely accomplished and a real revelation. Then Friday I was at Moth Club, just arriving in time for the end of the woozy Afghan Sand Gang, pleased to find Hotel Lux on the bill but there to see White Room, who I can't quite work out why I like so much, given their whimsical lyrics and Beatlesesque psychedelia aren't usually selling points for me, but they were great again, even though I was sad their singer had cut his hair.
I had had high hopes for going to something political on Saturday but the snow had returned and I really needed to just spend the day at home recharging my batteries. I did venture out in the evening to the Coliseum to watch the ENO's production of Iolanthe, which I had lured a random trio of friends along to; some of the attempts to inject humour were pretty cringey but musically it was great and I had the songs going round my head for days afterwards. On Sunday I met up with N to poke around the Photographers Gallery for a bit, which is quite manageable and always changes so if you pop back six months later you can be sure of seeing something different. Then I met up with cousin A and we went to the RA's exhibition on King Charles as subject and collector, the Van Dykes of him and his family rubbing shoulders with the Renaissance masterpieces of his collection, plus a series of monumental pictures depicting Caesar's triumph, faded but fascinating.
We finally managed to all get together for an Aberrant session last Monday, our first of 2018, then I had a couple of evenings in (after a work errand collecting someone from hospital on the Wednesday) before N and I met in Wood Green on Thursday eveing to see Black Panther, which was extremely satisfying.
