On the Thursday before Xmas we gathered at The Lexington for Jaimie's birthday, which was lovely as it never normally gets celebrated, being so close to Christmas: a bunch of us hung out with some drinks downstairs (I had picked up N from tea on the South Bank, meeting some of his Mum's side relatives in the process), then a smaller posse went up to the Loud Women gig that was happening upstairs. We saw Guttfull, pretty confrontational feminist punk, who had inherited at least one member and one song from The Wimmin's Institute, and then Joanne Joanne, an all-female Duran Duran covers band, who sounded good but I would probably have enjoyed more had I known the source material.
I was pretty conflicted about which gig to go to on Friday, the choice I made had some good bands but could have done with more crowd/atmosphere: it was at the smaller space at 229 and started with Mourning Birds, who were new to me but pretty rocky, then more shoegazey 485c, who I really like, Dirty Orange I'd also seen before and have a muscular American rock sound which is fine but doesn't set my world on fire, Foxe started promisingly with some jangly guitars and scuzzy lyrics but didn't seem to quite maintain it. Headlining were False Heads who were definitely a cut above with plenty of energy.
I ended up staying in London pottering on Saturday, only heading down to Winchester for the annual December 23rd Party in the evening: after a multitude of overseas visitors last year, it was more of a core group year with about 15 of us, plus two tiny babies, although TQS, his friend K and I finally put into action the oft-threatened plan to recreate the rituals of our youth by heading up St. Catherine's Hill at two in the morning and walking the mizmaze. I hung around in Winchester in the morning until my parents picked me up en route to my Uncle and Aunt's in Oxfordshire for Xmas, once again reassuringly recreating the routines of childhood.
It was all very nice: a quietish Christmas Eve before N and the Wolverton Seven joined us on Christmas Day itself, I was hoping to escape for a walk with Cousin A in the morning but the complexities of constructing a big enough table for lunch kept us busy and I did end up a bit restless at all the sitting around. It was nice to play Zombies into the early hours with my cousins after children and grandparents had gone to bed, as it felt as though we had done something more than eat and sit with the day. N & I drove back into London Boxing Day morning and managed a bit of a walk along the canal before settling down to Dixit, Cards Against Humanity and 15 forms of cheese with his housemates in the evening.
I was back at work on the 27th but making the most of the peace of the drop-in being closed and just B and I in the office. I spent that evening roasting an enormous turkey I had picked up cheaply, because I always love cooking with the leftovers, then on Thursday first had drinks with E in Chalk Farm, then Lovely Joe came over at about 10pm, although I flaked out after just a couple of hours. I headed up to Walthamstow Friday evening to watch The Last Jedi with N & his housemates, which was pretty satisfying, even though you can still map pretty much every element onto its equivalent in the original trilogy. I came home and spent a very domestic day yesterday, including planting out the fruit bushes I very excitingly got for Xmas, before M returned in the evening.
