Two Sundays ago N & I drove out to Marsh Gibbon for the final leg of Cousin A's 40th Birthday celebrations, a family get together and meal, which was exceedingly pleasant, marred only by the brief excitement of having to jump-start the van to get back home again. I was in Lewisham for Aberrant on the Monday and then went to a gig at a venue I'd not been to before, Corsica Studios under the arches at Elephant & Castle. They had a good ambiance but really low lighting levels inside and they only wanted to sell me beer or cider in coke-sized cans, which I obviously responded to by not buying anything at all. I was there to see Sorry, who I'd enjoyed a couple of times as a support but didn't quite wow me as much headlining, I struggled to connect to anything in their short and punchy songs. They were supported by a spoken word artist, Georgie Jesson, which was an nice change, and a band called Middle England whose drag aesthetic belied an unexpectedly surfy sound.

I went round to N's on Wednesday then was at the Electric Ballroom Thursday night to see The King Blues with J&E. We got there during the second support, The Gallerys, which was a shame as they were pretty decent, and then The King Blues produced the energetic, political fun we've come to expect from them. I was back in Camden the next night at the rather smaller Lock Tavern: support were Meat Candy, instrumental heavy, wailing guitars, really good, and I was there for Naked Six who've gone from being a 3-piece to a 2-piece since I last saw them, one guy seeming to somehow cover both guitar and bass- they were pretty heavy live and well worth seeing.

On Saturday I headed down to K's for our friends' Xmas with her and Layla's families: it was four adults and 6 kids ranging from <1 to 11, so it felt like we spent most of the time either herding children or washing up and the other grown-ups were all in bed by 10.30 that evening. The weather was pretty grotty so we couldn't even escape the house but it didn't translate into the snow that the rest of the country got: probably for the best given how remote we were. It was still really nice and we hung out quite a while Sunday morning too before heading back to London, where I met N and some friends for some Old Compton St mulled wine before carrying on home.

This week has entailed Goats at the Royal Court on Monday, which was okay, although we were about as entranced by the live goats on stage as we were by the play, an evening-in Tuesday then catching an EP launch by Tell Tale Tusk at Balabam last night. They're a close-harmony folk quartet: I know quite a few people who like them but only managed to drag N along (plus Tammy for a bit), which was a shame as they put on a really well-crafted show with two halves, special guests (some storytelling mostly) and a fabulous set. It's a lovely venue but the space actually in front of the stage is a bit limited by its set up, unfortunately.
