Mar. 25th, 2011 10:19 amsaw T for the first time since the Summer on the Sunday, he came over for lunch and afterwards (with Mags and A) we took advantage of the sun and went for a wander down through Ladywell Fields and a ribbon of other parkland stretching down to Beckenham Place Park with its dilapidated mansion; it wasn't the most picturesque walk I'll ever do but pleasant nonethless.
Unknown Armies and Spanish since then and on Wednedsay I headed back down to Beckenham, the modern-day site of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, now a Medium Secure Unit, in order to visit one of the guys I wrote to via Bent Bars. One metal detector and one search later I was led through a maze of eeriely silent airlocked corridors into a visiting room to await P while my escort retired to the room's built-in hide to keep a watchful eye over proceedings. It went pretty well although the time was up much more quickly than I was expecting.
Last night (after a day of illuminating and depressing training on welfare benefit changes) I met up with
ketchgirl at the IMAX to watch the National Theatre Live broadcast of Frankenstein, which I really enjoyed. The actors alternate but our night had Johnny Lee Miller as the Creature and Benedict Cumberbatch as Frankenstein (I find it hard to imagien them the other way round but am assured it's just as effective.) I did really notice the sense of removal and lack of atmosphere in comparison to being there in person (in particular at the beginning with the creature's visceral birth and some steampunk effectes that looked like they would have been awesome live) but it became less of a factor as time went on, although I also found it frustrating not being able to direct my own gaze, it's not quite the same as a film where there is only ever one perspective in the first place. But all in all it was a great way of seeing something I would never have got tickets for otherwise.
Generally things are good, D's mother is over from Bulgaria and staying with us which is adding a cosy dometicity too, not least because D is home a lot more: all three of us being home at the same time (other than for a bleary five minutes somewhere around 7.45am) being an alignment of astronomical significance these days.
