I hung out in Olympia with a relatively new friend, C, on Thursday night: mostly our interactions have revolved around his attempts to educate me in anime and we've been marathoning our way through Evangelion- we managed to finish the series, which ended with a kinda exposition of its themes rather than any apparent resolution of the story, it became surprisingly deep though for something that started out with a very monster-of-the-week feel. There's still the film to go, though, which I've been promised will bring a bit more coherence . . .

Yesterday wasn't great: I'd had a hectic day mostly running around out of the office after one of my more demanding/needy clients and ended up not getting away as early as I'd hoped (an all too common theme at the mo) so by the time I got home all I had time to do was cook and rush out again, I was heading up to The Garage for the first of the Next Big Thing gigs but had forgotten to print out my ticket when I was in the office so by the time I had walked up the Holloway Road for about 15 mins looking for an internet cafe (about the same length of time it took to open up the attachment on my Blackberry- I've just been assuming it's slow and rubbish but it occurs to me that maybe something's actually wrong or I've not set something up properly) I'd missed most of the first band States of Emotion, which was annoying as their final song and a half seemed pretty good. Usually I'm pretty good at leaving work-stress at work but last night it seemed to be lingering, I was dealing less well than usual with having pitched up on my own and the drinks were going down rather too easily.

There wasn't anything wrong with The Heartbreaks, the next band on, but they didn't especially grab me and, although it was good to see Pete & the Pirates again, the sound and the atmosphere weren't as great as when I caught them a couple of weeks ago. I hung around for a bit afterwards as the venue shifted into club-mode but ended up heading home in time to catch the last train.

Today's been better: I had been supposed to be babysitting my nieces during the day, which I'd been looking forward to as I don't feel like I've been very involved with them so far and, whatever the peculiarities of my family dynamics, I would like to be; in the end, however, someone closer to home offered to do it, which I was actually pretty relieved about as it's meant a bit of a more chilled out day. Instead I headed up to Cambridge Heath (another corner of London that was pretty new to me) to meet up with Tom and others for brunch at an entertainingly chaotic and ramshackle cafe called Hurwundeki before some pleasant meandering, poking our noses into some of the art galleries along Vyner Street and checking out Broadway Market.

Depressing to hear about cuts starting to hit some of the incredibly important services that I've worked at or with, not only for good people losing their jobs but thinking about the effects that the disappearance of support for people already in an incredibly vulnerable and precarious situation is going to have . . .

I not a big watcher of anime, but I do like Evangelion. I've got part one of a remake, (going to be a long while before I get the rest as it's not all made yet) it's very pretty and seems to have a little more clarity. They are changing the storyline a bit though, will be interesting to see how that works.
