2010 in Questions
Jan. 6th, 2011 12:33 am1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Go to South America, I want to go back!
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I did, but it didn't do much good! I resolved to focus on just getting involved in one group I could properly make a difference to rather than spread myself too thinly- I settled upon the South East LCAP group, also wanting to be more involved locally, unfortunately we never really got the momentum to get functioning properly and most people are now focusing their energies on local anti-cuts campaigns so it's on hiatus. Undeterred, I've set my 2011 sites on the local Food Not Bombs group and will hopefully be helping them out for the first time this Saturday.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A number of friends, with another five I can think of straightaway expecting this year.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Grandma. We also lost John
.
5. What countries did you visit?
I started the year in Australia and whistled through Fiji, New Zealand, Chile and an earthquake-necessitated day in Argentina before coming back to the UK in March. Since then, Switzerland.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Better timing? There's lots of stuff I want to do and many of my friends are up for doing the same things but getting it together can be a frustrating process. I miss the people who seemed to make it happen much more easily. More fun nights out dancing, chatting, being among people.
7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The earthquake on Feb 27th and Grandma's death on November 21st will probably come closest.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Ending up back in a job where I'm valued and have a lot of freedom.
9. What was your biggest failure?
One dumb decision, made in the full knowledge of its dumbness, that threatened a lot of my stability. My ongoing susceptibility to such dumbness.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not badly enough that I remember it now! My cracked feet in the summer did get walking-impairingly painful at one point though.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My money rarely goes on objects & I didn't even pay for my Glastonbury ticket so I'm really not sure!
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My boss for giving me so much freedom and trust, I'll miss him badly when he leaves in March, and my housemates for making our home somewhere I'm so happy and for being so tolerant of my dumbness. People doing things to try to make a better society (or prevent a worse one) for no monetary reward.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The media, for reasons that The Daily Mash can express far more eloquently than me. Those refusing to accept that the disproportionate impact of proposed spending cuts on welfare and housing is driven by ideology and self-interest.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Train journeys, gigs, plays, alcohol.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Santiago, getting to go to Glastonbury after all, Buckland House & roleplaying with Eghamites, a reformed Suede.
16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Maybe Muse- The Resistance or Bombay Bicycle Club- Ivory & Gold, if only cos they played it on XFM so much!
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
sadder, I feel like I've been treading water since I've been back in London, plenty of fun times but no further towards whatever nebulous goals I may have
ii. richer or poorer?
poorer, I've still not reached the point of being able to put money aside to replace the savings I used on my travels since I got back 9 months ago, there's always something that comes up . . .
iii. fatter or thinner?
fatter, food is pretty central in our house!
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Dancing, being positively involved in a community.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Commuting- the new place is a big improvement but I'm still not used to having to travel so far for work.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
With my parents and Granny and Poirot.
22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
No, I've been pretty disinterested in a love-life to be honest, but occasionally feel like I may be ready to be interested in it again.
23. How many one-night stands?
Nine, if you must know.
24. What was your favourite TV program?
Well, we still don't have the TV working here but DVD-wise it's Desperate Housewives all the way at the mo.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I'm not very good at hating for more than about five minutes.
26. What was the best book you read?
Several really grabbed me but never quite held it to the end (Cloud Atlas, Pattern Recognition, Tom Jones) but for overall satisfaction, much to my surprise, I think it was probably Wuthering Heights!
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The King Blues- I think I may technically have first come across them in 2009 but they were certainly cemented in my affections this year.
28. What did you want and get?
A way to get to Glastonbury & a ticket for next year! My old job back.
29. What did you want and not get?
Sex in a tent.
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Plenty of strong contenders but I think Four Lions wins it!
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 32 and I went for an Indian with my housemates. Rock and roll.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Living with or close to people with the time, money, energy and desire for clubbing/random music occurrences/social centre cafe nights etc.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Holey.
34. What kept you sane?
Housemates I could chill out and do crosswords with, cooking, getting out of the house on a regular basis, getting out of London on a regular basis.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Alastair Cook
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Primarily those that I see are going to affect the people already struggling with poverty- welfare and housing benefit reforms. Cuts which will see services disappear (such as libraries and hostels) because once they're gone it will be so hard for them ever to come back.
37. Who did you miss?
cryx and
reindeerflotila
38. Who was the best new person you met?
The volunteers at WLDC, stepping out uncertainly into the world, just as I was when I was in their shoes ten years ago.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Decisions have consequences; don't expect to be so lucky next time.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I need some meaning I can memorise, the kind i have always seems to slip my mind.
Go to South America, I want to go back!

It sounds like a good aim for the year ahead to me :)
And in a bad way this:
"Cuts which will see services disappear (such as libraries and hostels) because once they're gone it will be so hard for them ever to come back. "
Having spent a year in a public library, it now pretty much breaks my heart to think of any of them closing. They are so important for the local community, as a center of things and just a place to *be* for all ages, and thats before even thinking about the obvious benefits related to reading and education.
