third verse, same as the first
Sep. 27th, 2008 08:51 pmso I didn't exactly plan this but I'm secretly proud of it . . .
Monday went to see one of the Ones to Watch gigs at the Macbeth in Hoxton which was a good venue with a good crowd- proper skanky, graffiti-covered toilets and bands doing their own set-up; I came on after my first Spanish class so only caught about half of the first support, Snish (or, if their merchandising is to be believed, Sn!sh,) which was a shame as they were easily the most energising warm-up act I've seen, with the lead singer ending up stood on the bar at one point; their music was decent, much more rock/metal than the subsequent indie/rock bands, and it didn't hurt that they were uniformly hot. Next came Sky Larkin who weren't bad but didn't make much of an impression, but the headliners Bombay Bicycle Club looked about twelve and were fantastic- a lot of the youthful crowd were singing along and I couldn't quite decide if they were fans or classmates.
The gig hadn't finished till way gone eleven, which I quite liked amongst the predictable and processed packages you get at most venues but left me very confused when I turned up again the next night and the headliners, Iglu & Hartley, were through by half nine. It meant I'd only caught the end of the support Mikachu (a shame, as they sounded unusual & interesting) and was left a little confused when the whole thing was over. Iglu & Hartley were pretty good, again a fair bit of energy to them, although most of their songs have more rap in them than In This City, the one that's currently getting a lot of radio-play, which doesn't overly excite me
Wed I went to see The Paddingtons at the Barfly which was proper thrashy-guitared, sweaty, jumping around fun; support were a band called Eight Legs who were in the same vein and decent although seemed kinda young in attitude in a way Bombay Bicycle Club hadn't and were very clearly being 'managed' in a manner that involved people constantly interfering with stuff during their set, then an act called Klaus Says Buy the Record which was one guy with a guitar- his sound was beautiful but it was the wrong crowd and I spent most of it wanting to murder the majority of the audience who wouldn't shut up
Thu I went under false pretences to a private view for an exhibition of record design which was more fun for the false pretences than the art, then headed down to a gig at an awesome little underground (as in 'in a basement' rather than secret) record shop in East Dulwich called The Dream Machine. My friend V's band Humousexual played their sons about cycling, chick peas and South London along with another DIY band, Gordon Gabo's Army, who were from Southampton- hurrah!
I had another friend playing a gig Friday night at the Oh! Bar in Camden, a night called Monopoly- although it turned out to be more a club night with a whole bunch of bands playing than a regular gig, so by 10 o'clock they still weren't done with all the soundchecks. I didn't pay much attention to the other acts, I'm sorry to say, but I can still confidently assert that S's band, Greyhound Green were a cut above them, if only for the quality of the sound and tightness of their performance. Meant I didn't get to Popstarz till about two, which was a shame as we had the biggest crew down there we've had for ages (9, briefly, although some were leaving as I got there) and I'd kinda sobered up en route, although thankfully not enough to stop me having a dance.
