united in rain in the cities
Sep. 8th, 2008 01:09 pmweekend was fun & pretty chilled: Popstarz on the Friday night, there was dancing & seeing
kimkali again & seeing
kimkali dancing again, which were all good things; went along late for once and barely entered the indie room but still really enjoyed it.
had lunch with Mags on Saturday who was passing through the city- she'll be moving back down in March which will be cool although I'm not sure for how long; hung out with P down in Streatham in the evening which was great as I'd not seen him for ages, played games & watched DVDs and generally caught up.
Sunday I headed over to Brick Lane to meet someone for lunch, which I think went better than either of us were expecting & turned into a meander around Shoreditch and then a trawl round Soho and ended with us parting ways about 10.30; it may not go anywhere but it was a really nice way to spend a day. I've become so used to going to the same places and doing the same things that I'd forgotten what it was like when I first came to London, exploring new areas, ferreting out cheap things to do, excited by the possibilities and variety of the city, and yesterday somehow brought all that back.
I hate the way that having money has made me lazy. It's almost as though it allows me to distance myself from the city: it's too easy and comfortable to shut myself away in the same few pubs and cafes and stay there because I can afford to buy drinks all afternoon, order CDs online rather than rummage hopefully through the second-hand stores, be talked into getting in the taxi home at four in the morning rather than walking to the bus stop, pay the entrance fee unthinkingly rather than have to scour Time Out for new opportunities, forget how much of life is predicated on your ability to pay for it.

Date: 2008-09-08 02:40 pm (UTC)It was awesome seeing you again too! And behatted! ~approval~
Glad you had a good weekend.
Money is a strange thing. It alters the nature of ones existence in some small yet significant ways, and one finds there is a need to actively pursue that which is otherwise out of ones way, like walking home along the river and rummaging!

Date: 2008-09-09 12:25 am (UTC)Gosh listening to you talk about London makes me homesick. I miss just ferreting around the city doing my own thing and finding new places. Sometimes I feel Sydney just doesn't have that.

Date: 2008-09-09 03:04 pm (UTC)Popstarz has very much moved: now at Sin, about 30 seconds from First Out; the move really revitalised it actually, as it was getting a bit tired & empty, although the new crowds are inevitably terrifyingly young!
