Totally randomly, are you going to be at the Zeitgeist Mage or Mortals game today? I think you have a downtime return from previous games and I wasn't sure whether to bring it or e mail it to you.
I think this bit in 'Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and the Scientific Literature' by Lacasse and Leo says it all:
...the claimed efficacy of SSRIs is often cited as indirect support for the serotonin hypothesis. Yet, this ex juvantibus line of reasoning (i.e., reasoning “backwards” to make assumptions about disease causation based on the response of the disease to a treatment) is logically problematic—the fact that aspirin cures headaches does not prove that headaches are due to low levels of aspirin in the brain.
However, it would be nice to know exactly how the fuck they do work given the amount of the damn things I've swallowed over the years...
nice quote :-) yeah, I felt a bit embarrassed to not know how scientifically unsupported it all was having cheerily 'explained how they work' in the past . . .
After a shrink spent about half an hour animatedly telling me about neurobiology, I decided that I could never coherently explain, so am spared that embarrassment :-)
