went to see The Tempest at the Globe last night which was awesome (long-term readers may detect a pattern in my opinion of Globe productions)- they performed what must have been a fairly reduced version of the text all the way through with three actors playing all of the parts, particularly entertaining in the final scene when all the characters converge: I guess intentionally, with all the talk of conjured images and playing parts in the text, it suggested an interpretation where this great magnanimous revenge of Prospero's was nothing but his fevered imaginings played out by the island's three actual castaway inhabitants (Prospero, Caliban and Miranda.) Above all, however, the open-air atmosphere was wonderful and the performance riotously entertaining: I's particularly impressed with how the actors indicated their shift between characters so skillfully with nothing more than a facial expression. Sadly, I guess that's probably the last time I'll see Mark Rylance perform there as it's his last season as artistic director which will be a real loss, although I suppose everything must move on at some stage.

scooted down to camberwell afterwards to join the tail-end of Cesca's birthday drinks which was nice, chatting to work & ex-work people about their past experiences, Navy life and the Brixton riots; I've not gelled that strongly with my colleagues at St. Martin's, not through any antipathy, but they're definitely an interesting lot.

I liked that version of the tempest. Although there was one point where I managed to completely lose track of which characters were talking. I was a little confused about the rope I have to admit :-)

Mark Rylance is very good - he was very impressive especially when one of the audience fainted and he stopped whilst she was helped out of the theatre. Definitely an actor to go see in anything!

yeah, I know what you mean about the rope although they did find all kinds of uses for ti: they're doing a lot of sea-faring plays this season so I tihnk ropes are just a general theme: I sawa Pericles and that had lots of them in . . .
